Small changes in the garden help a lot. Trim dead palm fronds and seed pods, pick up fallen fruit, use closed compost bins and keep chook feed in sealed containers. Stack firewood off the ground and away from the house. Cut back branches that reach the roof. Keep the lids on wheelie bins, and do not leave pet food bowls outside overnight. Clear away piles of garden waste and old building materials, as rats nest under them. If you keep chooks, a treadle feeder that closes when not in use cuts off a big food source.
